WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHEEL THROWING AND HANDBUILDING?

Maybe you have never tried playing with clay or you experience is limited to a high school art class of one semester in college. We offer both wheel throwing classes as well as hand building classes. What is the difference?

HAND BUILDING: This process can be a more approachable form of making pottery, expecially for beginners. The clay is molded and formed from rolled out slabs and coils and formed with molds and simple inexpensive hand tools. This process can be a bit faster to learn and lends itself to making more one of a kind pieces as well as sculpture.

WHEEL THROWING: This form of making pottery is the one most people think of first. Using a pottery wheel you learn to center your clay and make a variety of forms while the wheel spins around. This skill can take a while to learn and a bit longer to master, but once you do you can make identical functional forms quickly.

INTERMEDIATE HANDBUILDING CLASSES

If you have completed one of our Beginner Hand Building classes you may be ready for working at an intermediate level. Intermediate Open Studio offers this experience. Working with your instructor, you will choose your own projects and complete them step-by-step with guidance along the way. You will also learn more about glazing and firing pieces.
