A Wide Variety of Classes

At The STUDIO, we are experts in clay, but our instructors also have skills in many other crafts. We’re excited to introduce two new classes: Needle Felting and Encaustic Painting. (ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT EACH TYPE OF CLASS BELOW)

POTTERY

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHEEL THROWING AND HANDBUILDING? You might have never played with clay or only had a short art class in college. We offer wheel throwing and hand building classes. What's the difference?

HAND BUILDING: This method is easier for beginners to make pottery. Clay is shaped using rolled slabs and coils, along with molds and simple tools. It's quicker to learn and allows for unique pieces and sculptures.

WHEEL THROWING: This popular pottery method uses a spinning wheel to shape clay. You learn to center the clay and create different forms. While it may take time to learn and master, once you do, you can quickly produce identical pieces.

FELTING

We offer occasional classes in both hand felting and needle felting. Needle felting uses barbed needles to push and interlock wool fibers, creating a textured, three-dimensional effect, while wet felting uses water and soap to agitate wool fibers, resulting in a smooth fabric.

ENCAUSTIC PAINTING AND COLLAGE

Encaustic painting, or "hot wax painting," is an old method where heated beeswax with color is applied to a surface, usually wood, and fixed with heat. Artists can shape the wax by scraping or carving and can add objects for more texture and detail.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES

If you've finished a beginner class, you might be ready for intermediate work. Intermediate Open Studio provides that opportunity. Many participants consider their weekly studio time as valuable personal time, helping to relieve stress and prevent burn-out. You will select your own projects and complete them with your instructor's guidance, learning more about glazing and firing along the way.

DATE NITE

Date nite offers a great way to have fun with clay - even if you have no experience. You and your special person will have a great time while making a functional project from start to finish.

PRIVATE CLASSES

We provide private sessions for individuals or small groups of up to 6 people. Let us know your preferences, and we will try to meet your needs. Sessions start at $50 per person per hour. Discounts may apply based on group size and number of sessions. For more details, call 585-532-0724 or fill out our contact form..
